Schmngyfest 2009

23 July 2009, 2:02 pm

view of the stage

Schmngyfest . . . Lewstock . . . Sonja's birthday party . . . whatever label you prefer, it's still a wonderful day . . . Joel & Sonja set up a stage in their amazing garden & invite their friends & family to spend the day enjoying the beauty of the flowers & talents of whomever takes the stage.

Kicking off the music was Karl Thurmond.  And what a kick he has . . . Performer-singer-songwriter-guitarist extraordinaire, when he picks up a guitar all eyes and ears are on him.

Next up was Alex Hill aka Alvin Morris and the Realtors.  Alex is a unique performer who has to be experienced to be believed.  Ask him for his "whistle" song. . .

Our host then took the stage.  Joel is a gifted songwriter, sharing his life and heart with every note.  I just love his lyrics and wish I could hear him every time he sang.

Mike Coucoules & saxophone/flutist Ernie P came after Joel.  Mike played his prozac jazz and I think even the daisies snapped their petals in time.  Ernie's soaring sax was a perfect accent.

Newcomer JW had the crowds favorite song of the afternoon with his Road Rage tune.  Another man with clever lyrics.

Jon's band took the stage and wowed the crowd.  What do you call the band these days Jon?  Very modern, youthful sound . . .

Deep voiced Russian Shai played his originals for us next.  Besides being a cutie, Russian is another talented songwriter.

Malcolm Clark had time for a set before he headed to his evening gig.  Lem & Mike joined him on stage to add their stuff to his not-so-ordinary blues.  Been too long since I'd heard Malcolm & it was a real treat.

Dustin stepped out from behind the sound system & joined his band 9 Pound Hammer on stage.    The dogs took their positions to keep the crowd from rushing the stage.  Dustin, Todd & Jake create beautiful music together and Schmngyfest was no exception.

I didn't get to stay to hear Joel's second set and the Last Chance Romeos.  I do know the music was wonderful to the very last note. It always is at Schmngyfest . . .
